Beowulf was a very interesting poem to read. I personally am not one to pick up a book or poem and read it just for fun, but there are few stories that when I begin to read, I find myself not able to put it down. I become so engrossed in the story and with painting the pictures in my mind, that its almost as if I'm there, and I'm watching the events take place from a third person point of view. Beowulf was one of those types of stories. After I began to read it, I no sooner found myself finishing the last page. I liked how in the beginning, the first thing the author wrote about was the bad guy, Grendel. Though at some parts gruesome, it no doubt grabbed my attention. I then liked how in detail the story got with the fighting parts. It told every little thing about how they fought, the things they saw or felt, and how exactly every event happened. My favorite part was probably when Beowulf was fighting Grendel's mother. I enjoyed that scene because there was one part when I was sure Beowulf was going to be killed and then he ends up winning the battle against Grendel's mother and earning another victory. Another detail I found interesting about the poem was that when Beowulf was in danger of dying from the dragon, that all of his followers still abandoned him, except for one. Wiglaf was the only warrior to remain, and I found that really neat that the author decided to write it like that. It really showed the courage and loyalty Wiglaf had towards Beowulf as his leader and that he ultimately kept his word that he would sooner give his life, than watch his leader die. I feel that in a small comparison, that concept is almost like life today. You have many friends, or people who say they will be there for you through rough times, but when the rough times actually come, all those people seem to disappear, except for a certain few. Then the ones who do stand by you through tough times are the ones you can actually call your friends, and are usually the ones who remain your friends until life takes you your separate ways, whether by death like in the poem, or just by choices like in life. Overall, I really enjoyed reading Beowulf. It was something different than what we normally read in classes, and I definitely found the story as a whole to be interesting and entertaining.
